Treat the evening as the second half of an Old Delhi day rather than a trip on its own. Fort in the morning, the market lanes across the road in the afternoon, dinner, then back for the show. It saves you crossing the city twice — the classic pairing, in order.
Getting there and back after dark
Lal Quila station on the Violet Line is a couple of minutes’ walk from the gate and Chandni Chowk on the Yellow Line is about ten minutes through the market, which is the part worth planning: the market route is fine in the evening but it is busier and slower than the map suggests. Check the last metro for your line before you go in, and have a plan B, because a show that starts late finishes later — metro, airport and distances.
